Lessons of the Tide
Born ceaselessly
Back into the past
Long after the die, oh honey,
It has been cast
And the fallout
Well fallen down upon my skin
And the waves of time
Oh, and the waves of regret
Crashed against me
Like the waves against the rocks
On the coastline of an acid sea
He said “You gotta let go
Because this is killing you.”
I said I would let go if only
I knew where to let go to
Cause all I’ve ever known
Of happiness was back then in my hands
But a fist held so tight
Can’t let anything else in
And what you think you’re holding on to, honey, oh
It’s already fled from within
You can move yourself forward
You can haunt your own past
You can think you own the mountain
Ah, but even they don’t last
They find themselves worn down
In the epoch of time
And without knowable
Reason or rhyme
You are dealt what you are dealt
Oh, and when a bad hand comes your way
It only makes sense to mourn
For so many days
Against the pull of the tide
When I was a young boy
The wizard did say
I found myself taken out of
A peaceful moment of play
When I found a dying baby bird on the ground
Fallen out of its nest
Never to live its life out
Not like all of the rest
And I recognized what most don’t
At an early age
We are not here for any easy ride
But, instead, to learn
The lessons of the tide
The lessons of the tide
The lessons of the tide
The lessons of the tide
These are not our lives after all
These are not our lives
